Quality drive with some nice features
Date: 2008-09-30 | Rating: 5
I purchased this to replace my 160GB hard drive that just wasn't cutting it. I like the 2.5" drives because they are USB powered and don't require a bulky power cord to carry around. I checked the Seagate, Maxtor, Iomega and others. The acomdata is by far superior. It offers USB 2.0 and eSATA. It feels very durable and the enclosure is wrapped in leather that matches the carrying case that comes with it. Best of all it was cheaper than the competition.

Excellent Drive
Date: 2008-09-08 | Rating: 5
This drive works better than I had imagined. I expected it to be slow based on other reviews but it's actually faster than I expected. Easy to use and recognized by my system as soon as I plugged it in. I bought two and would not hesitate to buy again.

GREAT
Date: 2009-02-08 | Rating: 5
This product is great: very small, and you do not need to plug it to a plug for it to work, which makes it very easy to use. In addition; no need of software installation to use it; just plug it in. I love it!

Reliable, great look and feel and THE eSATA WORKS
Date: 2009-11-14 | Rating: 5
My OS: 64bit Windows Vista I also did a NTFS reformat of it, because in order to store very large files you need to switch from FAT32 to NTFS I wanted a 500gb portable drive with eSATA and I bought this one even though I saw that other reviewers say their eSATA doesn't work. The eSATA does work, but you need to give the drive enough power. I tested to see if the eSATA worked by 3 ways: 1. I followed the directions: plugged in the eSATA cord first, then plugged in the USB. It shows as a normal drive, not a "Removeable USB Storage Device" 2. Next I took out everything, and just put the USB in. Now it shows as a "Removeable USB Storage Device" 3. Finally I plugged the USB into an AC power source, not the computer, and then plugged the USB into the drive and the eSATA in. The drive shows up even though its only connected through the eSATA. If the eSATA isn't working when you plug the USB in, then plugin two USB connects into your computer, so that it makes sure to have enough power to run the eSATA since the eSATA doesn't provide power to the device alone. The drive comes with a split USB connection, in the manual it says to try using both of the USBs on the computer end of the cable if your eSATA doesn't appear. Overall, I am very satisfied with this product. It comes with its own leather carrying case too that even holds the USB cable(also included) as well as the drive. The drive itself is very light weight and the design ,the leather with stitching with chrome accents, looks and feels great. The drive does not get very hot, even with long use. I am currently using it to backup my files before I switch over to windows 7. The Calvary drive has similar eSATA issues, I think its just that the drives aren't getting enough power because some USB ports don't provide enough power with just one usb connected.

Great Drive - Great Value
Date: 2009-03-18 | Rating: 5
I bought this HDD about two months ago and tested it extensively before writing this review. I haven't had any issues so far. The drive itself and the pouch that comes with it have a nice high quality leather finish. Performance is good too - when copying large files via USB 2.0, I get between 25 and 30 Mbps constantly. With eSata, transfers starts of at about 80 Mbps and stabilizes at around 60Mbps. (Tests were done on Windows Vista and an internal SataII HDD.) I would definitely recommend this external HDD to anyone looking for high quality and great value.

Great quality
Date: 2008-07-30 | Rating: 5
I actually bought this on sale to pull the drive out and use it in my computer. I ended up liking the case itself so much I put another drive in it and use it all the time. My only complaint is that the activity/power light is REALLY bright, which seems to be more and more common on externals now. I fixed that by sticking a piece of black electrical tape over it and leaving a sliver at the top so I can still see activity without being blinded. The drive stays cool by spinning down when idle and is fan-less, but the case is aluminum for heat dissipation.

It isn't crash-proof, it is an excellent hard drive!
Date: 2008-11-29 | Rating: 5
I have been using external drives for years and I have had drives fail from all the big names. I am sure this one will fail eventually too. I no longer expect a hard drive to last forever. Having such expectations will only bring you anguish when the drive gives up the ghost and you lose precious data. No matter the brand of hard drive, you *must* back up your data. AcomData drives are quiet, small, fast, simple (no bells and whistles), inexpensive and solidly built. I have had my AcomData 1 TB drive for about 6 months. This drive has more than exceeded my expectations and I will most certainly be buying more.

Excellent Buy!

I've used this for several months running processes that has kept it copying/writing files for over 8 hours at a time. I've put this through a serious workout and it has worked flawlessly. I'm considering getting another one.

Perfect for my needs.
Date: 2008-11-15 | Rating: 5
I researched hard drives for about 2 months before I bought this one. I'll be honest, I bought it based on the reviews. My worry was that I would get what I paid for, that it would be made of inexpensive material and just feel "cheapy." Nothing could be further from the truth. I don't know why this drive is less expensive than the others, I'm sure there's some technologic reason, but it suits my needs perfectly. I use it for backing up pictures, home movies, documents, etc and it works perfectly for that purpose. As the other reviewers have mentioned, if you have massive amounts of data to transfer, it will run hot due to the fact that is has no fan. The upside is that it's dead silent. You can hear it power up, but after that it's absolutely silent. It also feels solid and is heavy. This helps me know that it's not going to break easily or fall apart on me. It's also visually appealing. And last but not least, it's very compact for a 1TB drive. It's roughly the size of a 5x7 picture and about an inch thick. How can you go wrong with that? Believe the other reviewers, this is a very good, inexpensive hard drive.

Just the thing for backups
Date: 2008-11-23 | Rating: 5
I own a MacBook and needed an external backup. The AcomData 1 TB 3.5 inch drive was just the thing. Works without a hitch using TimeMachine, the Mac backup program, looks great and the small size of the external drive's enclosure unclutters my desk, while still providing a lot of storage. I've had the drive about a month and use it not only every day, but every hour! A very nice addition to complete my computer needs and at an even nicer price.

An excellent external hard drive enclosure with dual IDE and SATA to USB interfaces
Date: 2008-11-09 | Rating: 5
This enclosure is solidly built, finely finished, with good fit for 3.5" internal hard drives of various brands, and easily to assemble. It offers IDE or SATA to USB 2.0 interfaces. The blue colored part is an aluminum case that helps dissipate the drive heat without cooling fan noises (the remainder gray parts are plastic). There are three popular colors in matte finish to choose from: red, blue, and black. The vertical stand is attached to the enclosure by a groove and two screws for added stability. The blue indicator light is an approximate match to the blue color of the enclosure case. I used a Seagate IDE 250GB and a Hitachi SATA 500GB in the enclosure for the trials. Windows XP and Windows Vista readily recognized the assembled external hard drives. They were shown as USB devices with their respective hard drive product numbers and not the identity of the enclosure chipset. This could be important as some hard drive's proprietary software, such as Seagate DiscWizard, require the presence of the branded hard drive in order to be run. The data transfer was reliable, whether the file size was 2MB (photo files) or 49GB (a backup file). The data transfer rates were normal if not a little faster compared to my other external hard drives. The drives never got hot, just slightly warm during the data transfer or after being left on overnight. I am particular about the position of the power switch. I do not buy any enclosure which power switch is jammed in between the power cable and the USB cable. This enclosure has the power switch conveniently located above the cables. The tray that houses the hard drive is plastic, preventing the hard drive from making direct contact with the aluminum case for more effective heat dissipation. The side panel with the circuit board and internal connectors is screwed to the plastic hard drive tray, making frequent drive changes a risk of unthreading the screw holes. Overall I am fond of this external hard drive enclosure, for its nice design and finish, dual internal hard drive interfaces, aluminum case, and reliable data transfer. I am using the Hitachi SATA 500GB in this enclosure permanently. I have also acquired a red for a 640GB SATA.

The best cheap drive enclosure
Date: 2009-02-28 | Rating: 5
I tried this with both an old PATA/IDE and a new SATA drive; both worked flawlessly. The IDE drive required a jumper setting to "Master"; no jumpers were required for the SATA (WD Caviar). The printed manual is a lot better than what one usually sees with this type of product, but not as complete as the documentation on the included CD-ROM. pros: very quiet, fanless, good build quality for the price, nice stand. Looks better than most enclosures. cons: IDE connector is mounted on the PCB board, so you have to be a bit careful. The blue light is rather glaring.

Runs cool and quiet, works great!
Date: 2009-02-25 | Rating: 5
Not much to say except 5 stars! Love the way it works with both SATA and PATA drives. Shoved a SATA 750GB Seagate drive in, and it runs like a champ. It's not going to be as fast as eSATA, but at this price, it's a winner for things like backing up your data, or as a huge "thumb drive" you can carry around (or grab-and-go in case of earthquake, fire, or flood).

Do Not Buy If You Have A Legacy Disk Drive (PATA)
Date: 2009-05-20 | Rating: 5
Contrary to any specifications given on Amazon's own web site, this device DOES NOT SUPPORT legacy Hard Disk Drives that use a Parallel ATA type (PATA) connection. The vendor (AcomData) explicitly states that it will ONLY work with Serial ATA drives (SATA). AcomData does have a device that will support PATA drives but only using a USB 2.0 connection to your PC / MAC. According to AcomData, the "rub" comes in because the circuits on-board the unit were designed for either USB or Fire-Wire and SATA drive connections.

Well worth the purchase.I have been able to boot into the external hard drive with ease using firewire.

Nice Enclosure, but it is NOT for PATA IDE hard disks.
Date: 2009-04-03 | Rating: 4
I have used many different external hard disk enclosures over the years. I have had varying results... cases that have melted, cases that had drive capacity limits, etc. Eventually I found the Acomdata Enclosures at Fry's. I used their older, heavy duty cases many times. They are just excellent. Quiet, with no fan, but with excellent cooling. Easy to assemble / disassemble. I recently started using their lower cost and lighter weight Samba Enclosures. My previous experience is with the USB/PATA/SATA case. They work great. Same excellent attributes as the heavy duty cases. Today I received four of the items described on this page. From the Amazon product description, it looks like the perfect, universal disk drive enclosure - USB/Firewire/PATA IDE/SATA. It is not. In spite of what the Amazon product description says, there is no PATA IDE capability. The Acomdata web page has the description right, so I assume Amazon simply blew it on this one. Still an excellent case - since it is not universal - 4 stars instead of 5. But, if you need the PATA IDE capability, look elsewhere.

Good case, but doesn't work with WDTV
Date: 2009-05-04 | Rating: 3
I purchased this external enclosure to house a 1TB harddrive. I wanted to create an external 1TB hard drive to use with my Western Digital HD TV box.... Installing a HD into this enclosure was a breeze. The enclosure itself seems to be well constructed. After installing the HD, it worked just fine with any PC using the USB or Firewall...However, the WD TV device was unable to read from this enclosure. This probably is a problem with WD TV, but still I have other cheaper enclosure that worked just fine with WD TV.

High quality, perfect for my macbook drive swap
Date: 2009-07-22 | Rating: 5
It does what it says. Put a 2.5" sata drive in it and you've got a portable drive accessible via either Firewire 400 or USB2. Comes with a two-port USB cable and a six-pin firewire cable. The USB cable has two plugs on it, presumably to pick up the power from two ports if you need to. For firewire, no extra power supply is needed, provided you use a 6-pin firewire cable like the one included. I'm using a Hitachi 200gb 7200rpm drive, no problems. This drive originally came in my Macbook Pro, which I upgraded to a larger drive. The Tango case functions perfectly as a bootable firewire drive with my original OSX partition in it. FWIW, I used SuperDuper to copy the data off the external case and onto the new internal drive. It took a little over two hours to copy 170GB from the enclosure to the internal drive. The build quality is good. The case is aluminum, and the end caps are plastic. Inside a full-length PCB slides out to attach the drive to. This is not a cheap PCB that sticks on the end of a drive, only to loosen later. The drive attaches firmly to the connector and then two screws hold it to the PCB. The end of the case is vented and has a blue/purple activity LED. The case definitely sheds heat. I'm extremely pleased with this thing. I'm glad I thought to look for firewire, because it wasn't coming up among the best-selling USB-only enclosures. This is the best of both worlds for a very reasonable price. EDIT: Also, check out the Firewire 800 version of this baby if you want a little more speed. I just ordered one, so can't comment on it yet, but the FW800 should be nice for working on video.

Good price, great design and Double Firewire ports!
Date: 2009-04-29 | Rating: 5
It's probably one of cheapest firewire/usb2 drive enclosures that you can find. My other choice would have been the OWC Mercury on the go but it is way too expensive to get it USB2/FIREWIRE. I like the fact that it has TWO firewire ports, which means you can daisy-chain another firewire drive. Kind of unusual for an enclosure. Minor issue is the led light when it is on. When the drive is in writing or reading mode, the light changes to a light violet color. The violet color is somewhat close to the blue color when it is in standby mode. I really like the design. It is sleek with a matte-finish. One of better designs out there for an enclosure. I have a sabrent one and it is not as good design-wise. One more thing. Not sure if it is an issue. The USB port is the "mini pin" version, similar to the connection for most point-and-shoot digital cameras. Can any techie confirm if such port has a slower transfer speed than the standard USB port? Overall, I love this enclosure. Comes with both usb and firewire cables. Outer retail packaging is also well design. And this item is made in the good of US of A! I wish it has a silver color version to match to my mac mini.

Dance the Tango and Love it!
Date: 2009-06-18 | Rating: 5
The Black Tango Enclosure is simply perfect for my needs. I removed a 120GB drive from my MacBook Pro because I needed more space. This enclosure was all I needed to keep the 120 as a backup, bootable drive. Plug it in and it works. Unfortunately, I cannot get too techno-specific regarding transfer rates, latency, and such. However, it delivers awesome performance and the price is unbeatable. Everything you need is included. Finally, it is cute and you can dance with it (if you have an abundance of free time). Cheers...

Fantastic enlosure, great price complete with Oxford Chipset
Date: 2009-09-06 | Rating: 5
I was informed by Acomdata that this enclosure comes with an Oxford chipset assembled making this enclosure the best on the market for the price. Installing my hard drive was simple and the case works like a charm. It mounted on my Apple laptop first shot, no external power supply needed. It is sleek and aesthetically pleasing. I would choose this enclosure again over others. The excellent customer support Acomdata offers is an added bonus!

Plug and Play Perfect
Date: 2009-07-14 | Rating: 5
Within one minute of popping my dead laptop's hard drive into the enclosure, I had already begun transferring data to my new computer. The tethering ability is great and the device is slim and pleasing to look at. For the price, it is a great value for recovering data that may have otherwise been lost.

Well made, well designed, and works beautifully

After seeing some very poor reviews to the $10 and $15 enclosures, I decided I'd "splurge" and see if $20 could buy you a good drive enclosure. I'm glad I did. Unlike the plastic enclosures, this model uses a very well-designed aluminum case, which will withstand repeated installations. It also looks great, as a bonus, and appears to do a very good job dissipating heat. (You can tell this because the enclosure gets slightly warm to the touch. Contrary to popular belief, if something feels warm, that actually means it's doing a good job of pulling the heat out of whatever is inside it and letting it flow to the air. That's why heatsinks get hot, and why styrofoam cups don't.) Internally, the printed circuit board (PCB) takes up the entire length of the enclosure, and the drive is screwed on to it. This is much more stable and rugged than the cheap enclosures, where the drive simply gets shoved in the enclosure and attached to a small PCB at the back. An additional benefit you won't find on other, cheaper, enclosures is that an eSATA interface is offered, allowing for high transfer speeds if your computer can support this. The only problem I encountered was that the manual was completely incorrect in its diagram of how to install the drive, and must be referring to a previous generation. Other than that, I have nothing but good things to say about this product.

Nice enclosure; eSATA works as advertised.
Date: 2009-06-10 | Rating: 5
First of all, the enclosure works; that's always a bonus ;) I replaced my stock 80 GB 7200 RPM drive in my Dell E6400 and threw it into this enclosure. Worked fine with just one USB connector. When I got my eSATA cable (see my reviews), it connected right up and it worked perfectly with my Vista Business x64 install on my Dell E6400; no settings changes, no configuration, just worked. The eSATA cable fit nice and snugly into the connector and the connection feels pretty secure. I verified that it was using eSATA using DiskBench and got transfer rates around 55-60MB/s for a 1 GB file. Solid. Dramatically improved my virtual machine load and save times. Secondly, as a bonus, it's a very attractive case. It's relatively slim in profile (barely larger than the disk itself). The ends are plastic, but the core is anodized aluminum. The only way this could be better is if it came with some rubber feet or some rubber end caps or something to keep it from sliding around. I would definitely recommend this if you are looking for an eSATA capable enclosure.

My HP dv9500 laptop just stopped working, no warning...no chance to recover any files....I had backed up lots of stuff on cd's...but not iTunes library and my CD collection and lots of jpgs...empty feeling in the stomach.....fast forward 2 weeks....Blue Tango Portable Enclosure Kit to the rescue. It was expensive to recover data from HDD ......so I just removed them from the broken laptop. I read the Amazon reviews, and was skeptical of the cheap USB enclosures, but this enclosure got a good review and was only $20 with the bonus eSATA interface......so I ordered it Friday from Amazon prime....and it was delivered Monday 1:00pm.....Amazon rules. First off, the manual does not describe how to install the drive...it has diagrams, which could be clearer, but just follow them best you can and fill in the blanks. The enclosure was well made, all aluminum, metal end caps, the screws fitted well, and it looks kind of stylish in blue. Installing the hdd was a breeze, place hdd on backplane and push into connector, and secure to the (pcb) with 4 screws.....push the backplane back into housing (making sure to locate backplane in slides), replace end cap and tighten 2 screws. The housing holds the hdd securely...the connectors fit well....so I guess you could carry this around with a laptop.....but remember it doesn't have any shock protection. Connected the USB....it recognized the drive immediately loaded drivers and explorer opened my old hdd....with all my files accessible......great..... I connected using a single USB connector (2nd USB not required).....I didn't measure the time but it found all the files (110GB) in several minutes. I will connect with the eSATA interface when I get around to purchasing a connector cable (eSATA cable not included in box..pity). This housing and USB/eSATA enclosure is recommended, it works perfectly for recovering my data, and I will format the hdd as a spare backup.

Great for a ps3
Date: 2009-10-13 | Rating: 5
So i had bought a 500 gb harddrive so i could put all of my movies on my ps3. So i did the installation of that, and afterwards decided to buy an enclosure for the 40gb that was used in it originally. Best buy wanted 70 dollars for one probably not as good as this one. It took me less than 5 minutes to set it up. The harddrive is completely secure so you dont have to worry about the harddrive being damaged from moving around inside. I formatted it fat 32 (ms-dos fat for macs) and put most of my tv shows on it. I would buy another enclosure by this maker in a heartbeat. Good product.

Good quality, works great!
Date: 2009-10-24 | Rating: 5
Bought this to do some file recovery off a laptop hard drive. It was straightforward to assemble and use and it worked flawlessly! The screws are quite small and the plastic end caps are a little fragile, but I would say it's definitely a great bang for the buck! I especially like the durable aluminum body as compared to other enclosures made out of plastic. I wouldn't hesitate to buy this one again!

This is hooked up to a mac mini as a time machine drive and it is working very nice. Installation was fairly easy, be careful not to bend the thin metal sleeve that come off. The light isn't too bright but is definitely noticeable.
