Works great
Date: 2007-07-23 | Rating: 5
I bought mine some 6 months ago. Followed the instructions and works great with my computer (2005 Apple Powerbook G4, MacOS X 10.4). It handles my photo vault, iTunes library, video library and most of my documents. I'm a happy customer :-) Update: My unit died right after the warranty expired. I would expect at least three years of service from a hard drive, not just one. In any case, when it worked it did great, but the reliability is now in doubt. Not a happy customer anymore :-(

No problems so far...small, quiet, and fast!
Date: 2007-10-30 | Rating: 5
I own two of these drives (connected via Firewire to an iMac) and am about to buy a third. So far the only criticism I have is that the power light is overly bright...otherwise the drives are compact, quiet, and fast. I'm not sure if I've been able to beat the odds so far or if only the people who have received problematic drives have written reviews, but I've been impressed enough with the two I have to want another. (If things change I'll post an update.)

It is what it is.
Date: 2007-11-05 | Rating: 4
This is a basic external USB 2.0 drive for a decent price. The HybridDrive moniker simply means that while plugged in, the drive shows up as both a virtual CD-Rom drive and a standard hard disk. The Virtual CD-Rom drive autoplays when the drive is plugged in and is used for initial setup and later for both the password feature and for Nomad Desktop. The password system is well implemented and may be useful for some (it can be easily turned off too). Nomad Desktop allows one to run a few preinstalled applications (e.g., Open Office and a backup suite) directly from the drive. Overall, the drive works well on Windows XP and has adequate speed when used as a storage or backup drive. It does not appear to support any power management and the drive does not spin down. Regardless, it remains relatively quiet. It comes formatted as a large 465 Gibibyte FAT32 partition. Because of the limitations of FAT32 (max 4 GB file size, large cluster size, and limited number of total files supported), it would be advisable to reformat this to NTFS or similar modern file system.

Some vista problems, no serious quality issues
Date: 2008-01-11 | Rating: 4
This drive is quiet, fast and the added capacity is great. On my XP system, it works fine. The only issue I have with the included software is that it doesn;t work well with 'Large Fonts' installed in Display Properties. (the software on my U3 Sandisk Cruzer drive adapts perfectly to the font size) On my Vista machine, there are some problems with the drive mounting. The 'CD part' would mount, and when I clicked the utility to launch the 'HD Part', it kept refusing my password to login; but it WOULD allow me to change the password! Then it would refuse the newly-created password. Finally, I used the utility to simply enter my password and disable password protection altogether: for some crazy reason, that works. No help found on Acomdata's site. WRT quality, I have an older Acomdata drive and I notice this seems a little different. Case perhaps flimsier. One noticeable difference is a rather flimsy cheap-looking power supply with a thin cable & simple coax type connector. The older one had a thicker cable and large multi-pin cable and it felt solid. I don't know if that's because it may have had dual voltages, better grounding or what. Still, I have had no data failures or noise yet (have filled up about 150GB so far). Problem is: we live in a Walmart world. 'Cheap' sells. So don't expect perfect software, utilities, Vista compatibility etc...I think this drive is probably just as good as others I've seen and read reviews for lately...they probably are ALL getting cheaper in terms of quality and price.

Sleek case, low price, decent hardware, but some overblown and fiddly software.
Date: 2007-11-08 | Rating: 4
The fundamentals of the Acomdata 500gb are fine: the case is nice and sleek. No fan - so very quiet, but doesn't run overly hot. The face plate is stuck on with adhesive, and mine started to come off - so I bent it slightly and stuck it back in place and have no other cosmetic issues since. This drive only has a USB2 interface (no firewire or e-sata) but the price is incredibly low - almost as cheap as a bare drive. I could quibble that the power supply uses an odd 4 pin connector and is somewhat large and heavy - but that's minor. As for speed, I get close to the usb2 theoretical. There's no problem there. The more major quibble concerns the Nomad software suite. The "Hybrid Drive" takes up 2 drive letters - an emulated 122mb CDROM containing the software and drivers, and your 465gb FAT32 drive. If you choose to install the software (300mb required) you'll find that a lot of this software is cool open source stuff - but it adds a layer of complexity to what should be simple. Fortunately it's simple to get rid of - just reformat the drive - so no complaining. I chose to keep it because there's a decent free backup package (Redemption) and a utility which allows you to password protect the drive (not hard core - but better than nothing). (FYI - there's also Open Office, Skype, and Thunderbird.) Also, there's the previously mentioned issue of the FAT32 format (to allow compatibility with the Window95/98/Me stragglers, I imagine. A questionable choice for a large drive - but is practical in my heterogenous XP/98 environment. If you want to make it NTFS, just reformat. FYI - I did not test with Vista. I have no problem recommending this drive. If you end up hating it you can just take the drive mechanism out and mount it in something else. There's almost no cost downside since it's so cheap.

Quality drive with some nice features
Date: 2008-09-30 | Rating: 5
I purchased this to replace my 160GB hard drive that just wasn't cutting it. I like the 2.5" drives because they are USB powered and don't require a bulky power cord to carry around. I checked the Seagate, Maxtor, Iomega and others. The acomdata is by far superior. It offers USB 2.0 and eSATA. It feels very durable and the enclosure is wrapped in leather that matches the carrying case that comes with it. Best of all it was cheaper than the competition.

Excellent Drive
Date: 2008-09-08 | Rating: 5
This drive works better than I had imagined. I expected it to be slow based on other reviews but it's actually faster than I expected. Easy to use and recognized by my system as soon as I plugged it in. I bought two and would not hesitate to buy again.

GREAT
Date: 2009-02-08 | Rating: 5
This product is great: very small, and you do not need to plug it to a plug for it to work, which makes it very easy to use. In addition; no need of software installation to use it; just plug it in. I love it!

Reliable, great look and feel and THE eSATA WORKS
Date: 2009-11-14 | Rating: 5
My OS: 64bit Windows Vista I also did a NTFS reformat of it, because in order to store very large files you need to switch from FAT32 to NTFS I wanted a 500gb portable drive with eSATA and I bought this one even though I saw that other reviewers say their eSATA doesn't work. The eSATA does work, but you need to give the drive enough power. I tested to see if the eSATA worked by 3 ways: 1. I followed the directions: plugged in the eSATA cord first, then plugged in the USB. It shows as a normal drive, not a "Removeable USB Storage Device" 2. Next I took out everything, and just put the USB in. Now it shows as a "Removeable USB Storage Device" 3. Finally I plugged the USB into an AC power source, not the computer, and then plugged the USB into the drive and the eSATA in. The drive shows up even though its only connected through the eSATA. If the eSATA isn't working when you plug the USB in, then plugin two USB connects into your computer, so that it makes sure to have enough power to run the eSATA since the eSATA doesn't provide power to the device alone. The drive comes with a split USB connection, in the manual it says to try using both of the USBs on the computer end of the cable if your eSATA doesn't appear. Overall, I am very satisfied with this product. It comes with its own leather carrying case too that even holds the USB cable(also included) as well as the drive. The drive itself is very light weight and the design ,the leather with stitching with chrome accents, looks and feels great. The drive does not get very hot, even with long use. I am currently using it to backup my files before I switch over to windows 7. The Calvary drive has similar eSATA issues, I think its just that the drives aren't getting enough power because some USB ports don't provide enough power with just one usb connected.

Great Drive - Great Value
Date: 2009-03-18 | Rating: 5
I bought this HDD about two months ago and tested it extensively before writing this review. I haven't had any issues so far. The drive itself and the pouch that comes with it have a nice high quality leather finish. Performance is good too - when copying large files via USB 2.0, I get between 25 and 30 Mbps constantly. With eSata, transfers starts of at about 80 Mbps and stabilizes at around 60Mbps. (Tests were done on Windows Vista and an internal SataII HDD.) I would definitely recommend this external HDD to anyone looking for high quality and great value.

Great External Drive
Date: 2009-01-23 | Rating: 5
This is a great product. It looks slick, takes up little space and is very quiet. It is nice not having to listen to my old Maxtor drive's loud fan noise and vibration. The LCD light on the front of the drive could be a bit smaller and not as bright. By the way, at the time of this review the 640GB unit actually costs less than the 500GB unit, and they appear to be identical except the capacity.

MY 1ST BACKUP HD
Date: 2009-02-14 | Rating: 5
The company delivered my order in a timely fashion. Setting up, following the directions, and daily use was user friendly and uncomplicated. The "cost vs product specs", for me, turned out to be a "Real value for what I paid". The volume capacity and product features matched and in most cases exceeded comparable products/manufacturers offerings when I did my comparison shopping before purchase. In short, "I'm a happy shopper". Again, as in past experiences dealing through Amazon.com, I was not disappointed! Thanks Amazon. VFP

Shipper did well and the hard drive arrived in great shape. Used it right out of the box(after a warm-up to room temp)and haven't looked back. Size allows storage of anything, including many video dvd's I had stored away. Now I can watch them without searching through a ton of dvd's. Great quality
Date: 2008-07-30 | Rating: 5
I actually bought this on sale to pull the drive out and use it in my computer. I ended up liking the case itself so much I put another drive in it and use it all the time. My only complaint is that the activity/power light is REALLY bright, which seems to be more and more common on externals now. I fixed that by sticking a piece of black electrical tape over it and leaving a sliver at the top so I can still see activity without being blinded. The drive stays cool by spinning down when idle and is fan-less, but the case is aluminum for heat dissipation.

It isn't crash-proof, it is an excellent hard drive!
Date: 2008-11-29 | Rating: 5
I have been using external drives for years and I have had drives fail from all the big names. I am sure this one will fail eventually too. I no longer expect a hard drive to last forever. Having such expectations will only bring you anguish when the drive gives up the ghost and you lose precious data. No matter the brand of hard drive, you *must* back up your data. AcomData drives are quiet, small, fast, simple (no bells and whistles), inexpensive and solidly built. I have had my AcomData 1 TB drive for about 6 months. This drive has more than exceeded my expectations and I will most certainly be buying more.

Excellent Buy!
Date: 2008-12-16 | Rating: 5
I've used this for several months running processes that has kept it copying/writing files for over 8 hours at a time. I've put this through a serious workout and it has worked flawlessly. I'm considering getting another one.

Perfect for my needs.
Date: 2008-11-15 | Rating: 5
I researched hard drives for about 2 months before I bought this one. I'll be honest, I bought it based on the reviews. My worry was that I would get what I paid for, that it would be made of inexpensive material and just feel "cheapy." Nothing could be further from the truth. I don't know why this drive is less expensive than the others, I'm sure there's some technologic reason, but it suits my needs perfectly. I use it for backing up pictures, home movies, documents, etc and it works perfectly for that purpose. As the other reviewers have mentioned, if you have massive amounts of data to transfer, it will run hot due to the fact that is has no fan. The upside is that it's dead silent. You can hear it power up, but after that it's absolutely silent. It also feels solid and is heavy. This helps me know that it's not going to break easily or fall apart on me. It's also visually appealing. And last but not least, it's very compact for a 1TB drive. It's roughly the size of a 5x7 picture and about an inch thick. How can you go wrong with that? Believe the other reviewers, this is a very good, inexpensive hard drive.

Just the thing for backups
Date: 2008-11-23 | Rating: 5
I own a MacBook and needed an external backup. The AcomData 1 TB 3.5 inch drive was just the thing. Works without a hitch using TimeMachine, the Mac backup program, looks great and the small size of the external drive's enclosure unclutters my desk, while still providing a lot of storage. I've had the drive about a month and use it not only every day, but every hour! A very nice addition to complete my computer needs and at an even nicer price.

Data is distributed across both hard disks simultaneously, achieving faster transfer rates and shorter access times. AcomData's hardware-based RAID 0 controller works automatically, behind the scenes. There's no software to install, and unlike the software-based RAID schemes it does not depend on your computer's processor. The result is full capacity, super-charged performance, and no compromises.

Acomdata 2TB external drive
Date: 2009-01-17 | Rating: 5
I'm a Video Editor by profession and always shopping around for external drives. Tried my first Acomdata 320gb drive a while back to back up my system's drive and it didn't disappoint. I then tried the 2 TB external drive to see if it could handle the rigors of editing... It did with ease, so now I just bought another. Knock on wood, I haven't had any problems and definitely recommend this drive. Oh, not to mention the price for 2TB of storage space... unbelievable!

I like it!!!!!
Date: 2009-03-01 | Rating: 5
Well, its too bad the reviewer below didn't realize that the drive comes with a cd, which the user manual is on in PDF Adobe. If he had opened that, he would have realized there is a protocol for mounting this drive especially with Macs. Oh well, not his fault, it could have been a return in which the cd was not included (Happens all the time). Anyway, I love this drive,it has on and off switch which Seagate has discontinued, multiple interface including firewire 800 even daisy chained 800!!! I will say this, it is loud as hell, but that's just the fan which is top of the line. Acomdata makes great drives, they usually drop the ball on little things like power chords that aren't as secure as I think or would like them to be. I never understood why power chords aren't the screw in type for drives, especially considering the damage a yanked out chord can cause. Otherwise, this thing is a tank, a really nice drive.

Works great!

So there was a problem when setting it up with 10.5.X. Called customer service, they were friendly and helped me out quickly. Simple steps to save everyone time (wish it was on their website): - Disk Utilities - Select drive - Select Partition tab - Set Number of Partitions - Click on "Options" - Select "Apple Partition Map" - "Apply" - Go back to work!

Very performant HDD, a bit too noisy though
Date: 2009-04-07 | Rating: 4
The Firewire & RAID combination gives this drive an edge over the competition in the same price range. It is definitely faster than the Iomega Prestige 1.5TB (which sells for the same price) when connected on a Firewire 400 port. Newer Macs have Firewire 800, so expect an even better performance. Despite the complains of other users, the drive works without any problems on Macs (needs to be formatted as HFS+ using OSX included Disc Utility; the Iomega Prestige also needs to be formatted). The unit comes with detailed setup instructions. For those interested, the drive also works with Western Digital HD TV media player in both the HFS+ Journaled and not-Journaled configurations. On the negative side, you have to keep in mind though that this is a RAID system. There are two hard drives in there, plus a fan, so expect roughly the same noise and vibration level as a quiet desktop computer. The drive is also rather heavy, which hinders portability. Bottom line Pros: fast transfer speed; dual Firewire and USB connectivity; compatible with WD HD TV Cons: heavy unit; rather noisy Forgot to mention. The power input has a very weird 4 pin connector that can plugged in more than one way. According to the setup instructions, the connector fits only one way. This is not true. If the drive doesn't power up,try rotating the power connector, then turn the drive on again. The people from Acomdata should definitely fix this problem!

Great HD for the money, perfect movie server for Mac Mini
Date: 2009-04-04 | Rating: 4
Excellent hard drive for the money. My only gripe was the fan noise. I've decided to take the fan out and it is very quiet now. The HD powers down on its own when not in use so there isn't much heat. I am using it for a movie server with my Mac Mini.

Excellent hard drive for the money. My only gripe was the fan noise. I've decided to take the fan out and it is very quiet now. The HD powers down on its own when not in use so there isn't much heat. I am using it for a movie server with my Mac Mini.

This portable drive is well made. The rubber siding helps protect it from getting scratched; would it withstand a big drop? who knows?!?!? I didn't have an issue with the software being for windows only. My only problem is that the software wouldn't recognize my index finger consistently with the biometric scanner....sometimes it would, other times it would not. If it did scan my finger correctly the software would hang up. I contacted acomdata and they emailed me an update to the software. That did not help as I still encountered the same problem. I think the portable drive needs some fixes before it will be purchase worthy. I would not recommend at this time.

Drive seems good but it does require you to install software. The software is only Windows compatible and requires administrator login. If you really didn't have to install software I would not have a problem with this product. I returned this product and purchased Buffalo Technology HD-PF320U2 320GB MiniStation Portable USB 2.0 Hard Drive with TurboUSB (Black)

Not much luck
Date: 2009-08-07 | Rating: 2
I purchased a couple of these and returned them. First, I will say that the concept and construction are well done. It is a little bit heavy, but it sits nicely on the desk with the rubber border and the fingerprint reader is in a nice position. So as far as the concept goes, it is a nice unit. This is the reason it gets two stars instead of one. The fingerprint recoginition software was also nice from a simple user interface standpoint. However, I am very suspicious of the software. I had quite a few problems on both drives. I contacted Acomdata, and they were helpful. They provided a software application to reconfigure/reset the device. I had two drives, so my problems were not likely due to a luck of the draw bad drive. They both behaved the same way with my system. You can use this drive with the entire drive encrypted, none of it encrypted, or half and half. I tried it all ways. If you use an encrypted partition, you can not hard set the drive letter, so it always comes up as the next drive letter available. This is problematic if you would like to use the drive as an encrypted backup drive. Your backup software needs to know the drive letter it will be. If it comes up as a different drive letter, then you need to change your backup software each time to use the different drive letter. If you use it in non-encrypted mode, you can fix the drive letter. I tried my first backup. I would get through about 50,000 files and it would crash. It would say my system (pretty good system) is out of resources. I would immediately try again. This time I might get 5000 more files, then the same message. I tried again, and I would get about 1000 more files before it failed. The resources on my system were to the point that many of my other programs would fail to operate. I would eventually have to restart the machine, and one time I couldn't even restart it. It is almost as if the software from the drive, that is being used when moving files to the drive, had some sort of memory/resource leak. I'm not a software expert, but that is what if felt like. This happened with both encrypted and non-encrypted partitions. I tried another computer (top of the line). The problem seemed better, but slightly different. It still didn't finish correctly. Through part of this, I even had an error that corrupted part of the backup and I could not recover the data. Both computers had XP SP2. So there you go, I had a lot of random trouble. Could be my computer, or the other computer, or the fact that I was unlucky enough to get two bad drives. The design is nice enough that it may be worth trying out, but it would be nice to hear some reviews from other people who have had better luck first. It just got to the point where I couldn't trust that my data was being handled safely, so I had to return it. If you have had good luck with this drive, please post.

Up and running in a jiffy
Date: 2005-11-14 | Rating: 5
My first enclosure purchase--from Amazon for total of $51.00, including shipping. Cheaper enclosures to be found on E-bay and Amazon, but I went with Acomdata because all the Acomdata 160 GB external HD's I've purchased in the last few years (each costing less than the previous one) all work well still. In a matter of a few minutes, put in a new Seagate 160 GB internal ATA 100 HD as per general Acomdata instructions (including positioning a little rubber plug to the 'master" location on the HD--this is not part of the Acomdata product, but pointed out in the instructions and just one of those mysterious, necessary steps that make assembling the enclosure a little perplexing for the electronically timid). Once the power cord was attached, the USB cable connected to a Mac Mini and the power switch then turned on, the HD popped onto the screen as a message--a request to be intialized. For the Mac system, if there is nothing on the HD drive (as in this case), just select "initialize", then "erase", give a name to the HD and a little labled icon will then land on the screen thereafter, as well as on any other Mac you connect it to. Was immdeiately down-loading a few GB's of files and all worked well. Dragging the icon to trash gives a clean disconnect and the enclosure allows you to turn off the HD once the icon is gone from the screen. Nice system--the enclosure let's you use the really robust internal HD's externally, even to fill them up and remove them from the enclosure as a huge file storage system or as back-up, leaving the enclosure to be used with another HD. Also let's you continue to use functioning IDE internal HD's removed from a computer for any reason. Bravo for making something complex seem simple. ADDED COMMENTS, 3/31/08 : Acomdata has changed this model and the item you will recieve ordering here will not be the one shown in the picture above. The newer model is a smaller, tighter fit for a hardrive, with a much thinner aluminum shell--not the substantial aluminum brick I reviewed above. I ordered from this Amazon site and received the newer model instead. I have two of these new models now. The one I've put to use so far works fine, so likley the electronic componets are just as good. FURTHER ADDED COMMENTS, 6/20/08 : The item picture above has been changed now to match what you will get. Also, the electronics are actually a little more sophisticated--the HD will now automatically stop spinning when you ejected the icon to disconnect HD from computer. You still have to turn off the enclosure, but the HD isn't spinning if the icon isn't displayed on your desktop. All in all, the one I'm using still works fine.

Quiet, reliable, solid

I purchased this enclosure to replace a cheaper one from Compusa that started failing on me. This one has a solid and sturdy metal casing and also includes a metal stand. You may place the unit horizontally or vertically. It runs silently and does not overheat at all. I installed a Maxtor 120GB IDE drive in this enclosure. You can install a new or used hard drive (HD) as well. Drive capacity is high (over 350GB). The only small detail to be observed during installation is to set the drive as a master. This requires a tiny jumper to be placed on your HD. Usually, the HDs indicate the jumper locations, so this shouldn't complicate things too much unless you dont't have a jumper at hand. Once the drive is enclosed, you must connect it to the USB port on your PC. I'm a Windows XP user and XP doesn't require any special software installation. Your enclosed HD is recognized as a huge USB 2.0 flash drive and Windows assigns a drive letter automatically. For a new drive, Windows will prompt you to initialize (format) it first. My honest recommendation based on my past experience is to shell out a few more bucks for quality, don't go for the cheap ones. I'm very pleased with this purchase.

Solid Product
Date: 2008-02-18 | Rating: 5
I got this to transfer data from a computer that toasted the motherboard but the hard drives are fine. This is truly an extraordinary product! As follows: -Very well packaged. It was in excellent condition when it arrived. -Instructions are straightforward. -Exceptionally solid construction. The on/off switch is maybe a tiny bit flimsy but should be adequate. -Very easy to assemble/dissemble. The whole thing is very rugged, heavy duty power supply and case. High quality connectors. Even the finish is first rate. The only part that was a little tricky was sliding the data connector onto the drive. But after a couple of tries I got it. I was up connected and running 5 minutes after opening the box. Data transferred very fast even with the USB version. No compatibility problems. Do not expect to be constantly swapping drives in and out: it is really designed to be a semi-permanent carrier, though it is certainly solid enough to stand many changes of the drive inside. It is more the assemble/disassemble that would take too much time. Do remember to set the drive you place in the can to "master" via the jumpers on the drive. If the info is not on the can you can check the manufacturers web site for the settings. (save the jumpers, they come in handy!) A great product, one of the best I have seen in a long time, well made, good documentation. Even comes with a usb driver CD in case you need it.

Great Enclosure
Date: 2008-01-21 | Rating: 5
The enclosure arrived in only TWO days. It took less than 30 minutes to install my old hard drive, plug it in and have it working. My Windows program had been corrupted, but I knew the hard drive was still OK. When it opened on my laptop with XP) all my data files were there and were easily downloaded. This enclosure has a very substantial case, it will be easy to change hard drives and is well worth the money!

Great Enclosure!
Date: 2009-09-05 | Rating: 5
If you've had hard drives fail because of heat and the lack of ventilation this is a great enclosure. I've had a couple of hard drives fail because of heat. I picked this one up since it had an open front and back vent. The thing I surprised me was that it had a thick extruded aluminum body that is great for heat dissipation. My hard drives run cool now and even though I'm not so fond of the way it looks I'm completely satisfied.

Uh uh uh uh Awesome!

I bought 2 of these and I should have bought four so I can run a 2TB raid. I will eventually get 2 more. I couldn't find a better deal on a 1TB portable drive that gave you Firewire and USB 2 options. Lets not forget eSata. So these were great!

Don't understand the bad reviews
Date: 2009-10-08 | Rating: 5
I have bought many of these drives - probably 20 or so over the last 18 months, mostly the USB/eSATA variant but some Firewire as well. I don't understand the highly negative reviews. As I see it this is as good as most any major alternative whilst being compact and easily stacked. Under sometimes very intensive usage I have had only one actual failure which was for a substantial fall whilst operating which I would not have expected any drive to survive. I simply opened up the case with that failed drive and reused it with a new OEM disk. These kinds of add-on drive are now a generic product, purchased on price primarily and style to some extent. This particular drive is in my experience perfectly reliable and when the price dips from time to time (as it does) I buy more. My primary concern with it is the lack of a 2Tb version and ideally Firewire 800. The Firewire version is slightly longer than the USB/eSATA version but stacks with it fine. I see no particular problems with this product in my fairly extensive experience of it and of its competition.

Seems great so far

I own 2 1 tb and 2 750gig Acomdatas in these styles and enclosures, and 2 320gigs in the older ones with the bright blue button. None of them have failed. Of course, I use them for backup, meaning I dont run them constantly as my main drive. If I edit projects from them, I move them to my computer to work on them. I did have a bit of an issue with formatting on a couple, as they were preformatted for PC, but once I figured it out, it's been smooth. The new one in particular is very silent and the firewire is worth the extra bucks for the higher speed, especially if you actually planning on using that space to back up video and large audio projects. I've done a lot of research, and the Acomdata exts include some of the highest rated SamSung drives. There was an issue with the .11 drives in 2007 to 2008, but that time has apparently passed. Other external manufacturers are also rife with claims of failure, many with higher rates of failure than this one. Its difficult information to get objectively, but don'r run your externals into the ground and that will help.

ugh I regret my failed purchase

i boght the 1T drive and it failed the first day. I even tried to reformating it and nothing could get it to work. I sent and e-mail on their website two times for tech support and no reply. I count this as an expensive lesson to stick to a tried and true known brands and bought a working beautiful 1T drive from Apple. More $ but no headache and hours of frustration of dealing with a nonfunctioning product.

Lesson learned also

I bought two of these hoping to use them for a RAID. As I was copying data over to the raid after setting it up I experienced write errors, first on one of them, then on the second. I decided to break apart the raid and reformat them hoping that would solve the problem. The second one hung during the reformat, and after that it was totally unusable. I tried copying data back to the first one and it was terribly slow. A folder that took 1 minute and 24 seconds to copy to my internal drive took 6 minutes and 35 seconds to copy to the Acomdata drive. At that point I knew I was going to return both drives. So I tried zeroing out the drive. Apple's Disk Utility program estimated it would take 5 hours to do this. After five hours it wasn't even half way through the process, and after 7 hours I went to bed leaving it running. This morning I checked it and the process failed due to a drive error. Based on my experience with these two and the previous reviewer who had much the same experience, I would highly recommend staying away from this manufacturer. I also will be going back to a known supplier.
